More Than a Wash Day: Care, Creativity and Community at Dreadlocks Society
There is a lot more to dreadlocks than maintenance appointments, wash days and products on a shelf.
For many people, locs become part of their identity, their creativity, their routine and sometimes even their business. They evolve as we do, and that is one of the things we love most about them.
This week at Dreadlocks Society is all about bringing a little more connection into that journey.
Yes, there is some Halloween fun happening with our Bingo Card, but the bigger theme is about paying attention to your locs, enjoying your style, supporting the dread community and making dread care feel simpler, more personal and a lot more enjoyable.
Welcome to the family, The Lokk Sista
One of the things we love most about Dreadlocks Society is watching our community grow beyond our own salon and online store.
Recently we welcomed one of our newest stockists, The Lokk Sista.
If you have seen her recent stockist unpacking Reel, you will know exactly why we are excited.
There is something pretty special about seeing another dread professional open a box filled with products that will soon be sitting in their workspace, ready to support their own clients.
Because this is bigger than simply sending products from one business to another.
It means people can access specialised dread care through professionals they already know and trust.
And that is exactly the kind of network we want to keep building.
Go and show @thelokksista some love, check out her unpacking and welcome her to the Dreadlocks Society stockist family.

Bringing a Little Fun Back Into Dread Care
We have created a Dreadlocks Society Bingo Card this week, not because dread care needs another complicated checklist, but because sometimes it is nice to make the ordinary things a little more fun.
The card includes simple activities such as washing your locs, giving your scalp some love, wearing your favourite dread accessory, trying a new loc style, sharing your favourite Dreadlocks Society product, taking a dreadhead selfie and even complimenting another dreadhead.
There is also a little reflection built in. How long have you had your locs? Is there something your hair has been quietly asking you for?
Sometimes those small questions are surprisingly useful.
It is easy to fall into the same routine for months or years without really thinking about whether it is still working. Our hair changes, our lifestyle changes, the weather changes and mature locs can behave very differently from newer ones.
The Bingo Card is simply an excuse to check in, have a little fun and maybe do one thing for your locs that has been sitting on the mental to do list for a while.
Complete any five squares and you can also enter our mystery prize draw.
What Are Your Locs Telling You?
There is no universal dreadlock routine that works perfectly for everyone.
That is one of the biggest things to understand about loc care.
Someone with newer locs may need a completely different approach from someone who has been growing theirs for ten years. A person spending a lot of time outdoors may have different needs from someone working inside every day. Hair density, scalp condition, lifestyle and even how often you tie your locs up can all influence the way they feel.
That is why we always encourage people to pay attention.
Do your locs suddenly feel heavier?
Does your scalp feel like it needs more care?
Are you noticing buildup?
Are you using more products than you actually need?
Has your wash routine become something you rush through instead of doing properly?
Sometimes dread care is not about adding something new.
Sometimes it is about simplifying what you are already doing.
A good wash, a thorough rinse, proper drying and choosing products created with dreadlocks in mind can make a much bigger difference than a cupboard overflowing with things you barely use.
Behind the Salon Chair
We are also sharing more of the salon side of Dreadlocks Society this week.
There is something really interesting about watching dread work happen in real life because the finished result only tells half the story.
Behind every maintenance appointment, transformation or new section of locs are dozens of small decisions.
How does the hair naturally sit?
What needs tightening?
What should be left alone?
How does the client actually want to wear their hair?
That is why professional dread work is not simply about repeating the same technique from one person to the next.
Every head of hair is different.
Every loc journey is different.
And every client walks into the chair wanting something slightly different.
This week we are having a little fun with that too, asking our community to guess what is happening during one of our salon transformations before revealing the result.
It is a nice reminder that there is a genuine craft behind dreadlock maintenance and creation.
Could Dreadlocks Society Be Sitting on Your Shelf?
Another important part of what is happening at Dreadlocks Society right now is the continued growth of our wholesale stockist community.
If you are a loctician, dread artist or salon owner, you will probably recognise this conversation.
A client sits in your chair.
You wash, maintain or create their locs.
They leave feeling fantastic.
Then they ask, “What should I use at home?”
That gap between salon appointments is exactly why we developed our stockist offering.
Approved Dreadlocks Society stockists can purchase our dread care range at 33% wholesale pricing and make those products available directly to their own clients.
It creates a much more complete experience.
You are not simply caring for someone’s locs while they are sitting in your chair. You can also help them continue that care when they go home.
And because we are currently growing the stockist network ahead of Christmas, the next five approved stockists will also receive a free Dread Loom.
For the right dread artist or salon, it can be a beautiful addition to the business without turning the space into a hard sell.
The products are simply there when clients need them.
Loose and Free or Up and Styled?
Of course, dreadlocks are not always about maintenance and routines.
Sometimes they are simply about style.
This week we asked a very important question.
Do you prefer your locs loose and free, or up and styled?
Both have their advantages.
Loose locs have that beautiful natural movement that so many dreadheads love. They can feel effortless, relaxed and wonderfully expressive.
Wearing them up can be practical, creative and endlessly versatile. It keeps the hair out of the way and can completely change the way your locs look.
Most people, of course, move between both.
Some days the locs are down and doing their thing.
Some days they are twisted, wrapped, piled up or decorated.
And occasionally they are doing something you never planned at all.
That is part of the personality of having dreadlocks.
There is no one correct way to wear them.

The Community Is What Makes It Special
The longer we work within the dreadlock world, the more we realise that the community is one of the most interesting parts of it.
There are people at every stage of the journey.
Some are researching their first locs.
Some have had them for decades.
Some love regular maintenance.
Some prefer a much freer approach.
Some decorate every loc.
Others keep things beautifully simple.
There is room for all of it.
That is why we want Dreadlocks Society to be more than a shop or a salon.
We want it to feel like a place where people can ask questions, learn, share their experiences, discover artists and connect with others who understand the journey.
Your story might be exactly what someone else needs to see when they are wondering whether locs are right for them.
Your maintenance tip might help another dreadhead.
Your photo might inspire someone to try a new style.
Community grows through those small exchanges.
We are currently looking for volunteers that would love to help Manage the community. Feel free to reach out.
A Little Treat in the Store
There is also a little offer running in the Dreadlocks Society store at the moment.
You can receive 20% off your online order using the code HALL26 at checkout.
So if your dread care products are running low, you have been meaning to try something new or you simply want to stock up on your favourites, this is a lovely time to do it.
You can explore the range at dreadlockssociety.com.au.
Your Loc Journey, Your Way
If there is one thing we hope people take from this week, it is that dreadlock care does not need to be rigid.
Your locs are allowed to change.
Your routine is allowed to change.
Your style is allowed to change.
You can be meticulous with maintenance or wonderfully relaxed about it.
You can wear them down, pile them up, decorate them, hide them or let them do exactly what they want.
What matters most is understanding your own hair and finding a routine that supports the way you actually live.
So have a little fun with the Bingo Card.
Try something different.
Ask questions.
Connect with another dreadhead.
Book the maintenance appointment you have been putting off.
Explore becoming a stockist if it suits your business.
Or simply enjoy your locs exactly as they are today.
That is what this community is really about.
Have an amazing day
Regards
Sonia Pilla
